ABEX FINALIST FOR YOUNG ENTREPRENEUR 2018

Chelsey is the epitome of a natural born leader. Through hard work, perseverance, team building and community support she has transformed her vision of what she would like to see in the beauty industry into reality. Chelsey began her entrepreneurial journey in 2009 at the age of 20, when she started her first business, Passions Beauty Studio, which has evolved into a high-end boutique. With great success and the introduction of her husband into the hair industry she established a barbershop attached to the studio called The Barber Corner in 2017.  Most recently she created, developed and is co-owner of her own hair brand, Prime Hair Brand, a luxury hair care line, which she is actively marketing and distributing in salons across Canada. The passion and determination that has ignited Chelsey’s entrepreneurial success story, is as strong today as it was less than 10 years ago when this all started, believing strongly in the motto “If you choose a career that you are passionate about, you won’t have to work a day in your life.”

Early in her career Chelsey began working at a hair salon that unfortunately was not profiting enough to continue business and an opportunity arose for her to take over their lease and start her own salon. As a natural born leader Chelsey always believed she would be a business owner one day. At the young age of 20 she took a chance and seized this opportunity, and the locally owned business, Passions Beauty Studio was born. Chelsey realized she could not just create a hair salon; she needed to build a culture, family, and something the market has never experienced before. The Passions Team refers to themselves as a family, the studio has become their second home, a place where they can create and maintain a successful career in an industry they are so passionate about. At Passions we hire for personality and attitude, skill is important, but we definitely need to ensure they understand what we are as a team and aspire to be for our clients. This allows us to take on staff that fits our culture and we’ll provide the training and education for them to thrive. We build confident skilled employees, we invest and care for them and with that we have created a tone of community.  This means our staff treat each other with respect, care and attention that they would afford to our clients. We exist in an industry where we make people look good externally, which makes them feel good internally, and if we want our staff to take care of our clients, we need to take great care of our team. With rapid growth and success, Passions was reaching long-term goals in less than two years. The company’s main objectives that have defined Chelsey’s success as a young entrepreneur involve marketing strategies, community involvement, profitability/retail, mentorship, and education.

Passions Beauty Studio started in 2009 as a 700 square foot studio in a leased space. In over one year in business Chelsey saw an opportunity to grow and expand her business by purchasing the building next door to the studio and renovated the space to create a high-end boutique salon and spa. After multiple renovations and an addition, the studio has grown to 3000 square feet which includes a newly added beverage and IPAD bar. Upon the inception of the business, Warman was one of the fastest growing communities in Canada. Recognising this growth in her community and in her business. Chelsey knew there was no better time for the expansion and the decision has paid off.

As Passions continued to excel, Chelsey and her husband, Cory Harder, generated the idea for another business. Having a Management degree from the Edwards School of Business, Cory was also very intrigued by the hair industry, and thus the new career path was ventured. During Chelsey's second maternity leave Cory enrolled in hair school at MC College. This is when Chelsey created the idea of an inner-business called The Barber Corner. The Barber Corner was established in August of 2017 and created a new target market for the studio which resulted in an expansion in services, and products for men. To begin, Chelsey and Cory designed a separate area within the studio that has two barber chairs. This allows for an almost separate atmosphere where men can have their own space. A new logo was created and placed at the front of the building beside the Passions logo. The barbers were trained by internationally recognized barbers both in class and private sessions in the studio. These sessions involved training for specialized services and products allowing staff to provide clients with top-of-the line men’s grooming.

Chelsey and her team at Passions and The Barber Corner, were recognized by some of the best hair brands for top sales in Canada, and it was at this moment that Chelsey saw the opportunity create a product that she believed in. After a year of research, product testing, and business planning, Chelsey and her PRIME co-owners created, developed and designed Prime Hair Brand, a luxury hair care line. Currently, marketing the product to be distributed to salons across Canada. She took on two investors, and kept it in the family. Karissa Moore, a master hairstylist and international salon educator, and her mother, Karey Bloodworth, a retired bank manager of 31 years.  The family trio with their own individual professional strength have a lot to add and is a perfect balance for this new business.

Passions Beauty Studio and The Barber Corner have shown great signs of strength thanks to the hard working dedication of young entrepreneur and owner Chelsey. Chelsey has always been inspired by the world around her and continues to make the best of any situation. She strongly believes in the education process and team building. She’s a trailblazer and she expects nothing less from her team and a key to their success is to ensure that they are up to date on all their training. This training includes staying on top of the latest trends involving both cutting and colour, makeup, and product knowledge for both hair and skin care.

Chelsey has managed to create a unique atmosphere within her business. She has managed and created the business to be a collaborative, motivating and rewarding environment.

When you walk into the studio you are getting an experience like none other. Their newest renovation created specialty spaces such as the beverage bar (alcoholic and non-alcoholic), an iPad bar, lather stations, and a lounge to process colors in. The ambiance of the salon and spa portrays high quality yet relaxing and modern; from the light fixtures to the staff style, product on the shelves to the music throughout the studio. The vibe in the studio allows guests to feel the energy and excellent service that awaits them.

Not only is Chelsey a three-time business owner but during that time she got married and had two children.  This has created its challenges in how she runs her business, but she is determined to nurture both sides of the demands of a rapidly growing business, while carving quality family time. She overcomes these obstacles with exemplary time-management skills, all while mentoring her team at the salon to be empowered to make business decisions that grow the business and take care of their clients. Inspired by expert industry professionals and local business owners, Chelsey incorporated new ideas and visions into her business. As she learns more each year, she enjoys mentoring others around her and throughout the community. Chelsey has extensive international training in salon, spa and business management, hair, skin care and esthetics, coaching and mentorship. Her businesses have received the distinction of being awarded many local and national awards.  To be recognised as 1 of 5 finalists for a provincial ABEX award in the category of Young Entrepreneur in this province has validated the years of hard work and dedication that she has given in her industry and community.

Chelsey says The support from so many over the last 9 years is truly heartwarming and I know that this would not have been possible without them all, my heart is full .

Welcome THE BARBER CORNER

IMG_5877.JPG

This past weekend was an evening of celebration for one local business as they celebrated their official grand opening. The Barber Corner, based out of Passions Beauty Studio in Warman, opened their doors on August 28th; however, they hosted a grand opening soiree Friday, November 17th. Approximately 30 people came out for a chance to meet the barbers; Brooke Rau, Dawn Deschamps-Earle, Josie Nieth and Chelsey and Cory Harder. The evening also consisted of an

opportunity to win some amazing door prizes, enjoy some delicious pizza provided by Vern’s Pizza in Martensville and take part in great conversation.

We wanted a space where men can feel comfortable and know that they were going to be taken care of.” Cory Harder – The Barber Corner

The Barber Corner provides a chance for the men of Warman, Martensville and surrounding areas to rejoice as it is a place where men can enjoy services specific to them. Providing haircuts, beard trims, hot towel shaves and men’s grooming products for hair, beard and shaving, men of all ages can receive the care they need. “We wanted a space where men can feel comfortable and know that they were going to be taken care of. We are happy to bring specific services and products tailored to men into the community,” Barber Cory Harder explained.

Harder had worked at previous jobs but knew that they weren’t something that he wanted to pursue as a career. Having been a part of Passions Beauty Studio since its inception in one form or another such as; bookkeeping, payroll, maintenance, etc., Harder began to become interested in the industry. After some encouragement from his wife Chelsey, the owner/operator of Passions Beauty Studio, Harder took the leap and enrolled at MC College in Saskatoon. “Throughout the years, I was extremely fortunate that Chelsey would bring me along to various training and education trips. She would encourage me to come to some of the actual training opportunities and it always interested me,” said Harder.

As husband and wife, a common question the couple gets asked is what it is like to work so closely with one another. “Chelsey has been my inspiration, mentor and the person that I look up to the most. I just try to learn as much as I can from her when we have the opportunity to work together. She has so much talent, as well as the rest of the team at Passions Beauty Studio and The Barber Corner, so I continue to learn more each and every day,” Harder added.

For more information about The Barber Corner, contact (306) 382-9707 or visit them on Facebook at ‘The Barber Corner’. “This adventure has been fun. It has been a very busy year with juggling going back to school, doing renovations and opening The Barber Corner, as well as family time, but it has been a blast. Everyone has been very supportive and excited for us, so that makes it even better,” Harder added.

PASSIONS - Awarded "Business of the Year"

Warman business a cut above the competition at local award event: Written By Jonathan Hamelin - Published by Star Phoenix

When you have a passion for your business, it really shows up in the quality of work. Over the last seven years Passions Beauty Studio in Warman has created a culture of quality customer service that every employee has bought into.

For these reasons, Passions received the business of the year award at the inaugural WMBEXA Gala – a joint venture by the Warman and Martensville Chambers of Commerce – on May 27 at the Brian King Centre in Warman.

“From the beginning, our focus has been on building a team that is focused on setting a high standard in the industry. When it comes to this business culture, we’ve stuck to our guns since the beginning,” said Chelsey Kara Harder-Bloodworth, owner of Passions. “We were very surprised and extremely grateful to receive this award. We were up against some other wonderful businesses in the community.”

Passions offers customers hair, spa and wedding services, deliver by a talented team of creative stylists and barbers, master stylists, advanced master stylists and estheticians. Harder-Bloodworth said every employee is strongly educated and the company always provides professional development opportunities. She said Passions also focuses on ensuring they have the best products in stock.

“Our customers love coming here and continue to do so on regular basis, whether it’s for nails every couple of weeks or hair every five to six weeks,” said Harder-Bloodworth, whose company has also been nominated for two ABEX Awards. “Because of the growth in our business, I think we can confidently say that we’ve been successful in retaining and keeping clients.”

According to Jaimie Malmgren, executive director of the Warman Chamber of Commerce, the fact that Passions received this prestigious award is a testament to the strong business culture in Warman. Warman is home to nearly 300 businesses, a number that has grown steadily.

While I was not involved in the judging process, I do know that Passions Beauty Studio has grown considerably in the seven years they have been in business,” Malmgren said. “Their customers would attest to the high level of service and commitment and I expect that shone through in their application.”

As Malmgren noted, the event was also a chance to celebrate the collaboration between two neighbouring communities. This was the first time Warman and Martensville came together for an award’s event. The initial goal was to fill 100 seats, but in the end over 250 business and community leaders were brought together to celebrate success.

Warman and Martensville business climates are obviously healthy,” Malmgren said. “Our municipal governments work hard to not only attract new businesses to our communities, but support existing businesses as well. Working together with the Martensville Chamber of Commerce for this event allowed us to shine the spotlight on some of the fantastic businesses located in our communities and celebrate their success.

Harder-Bloodworth said she was blown away by the professionalism of the event.

You walked in and it was very much a gala style. They had the tables set out and everything were very nicely decorated,” she said. “It was a very nice event to be able to network with other business and recognize businesses doing well in the community.”

The Warman Chamber of Commerce is now preparing for its third annual golf tournament that has been growing in popularity every year. The Chamber is also assisting the City of Warman with Warman Open for Business Expo, an annual trade show, in October.

#FASHION4STARS

Approximately 240 people made the short journey to Osler Friday, March 18th to attend the first annual Passions Beauty Studio ‘Fashion for Stars’ event, a fundraiser for STARS Air Ambulance. The event, which was held at the Osler Community Hall, featured an incredible runway fashion show, filled with clothing options from various businesses and hair and make-up done by the talented staff at Passions Beauty Studio.

The first 75 people that arrived at the event had the chance to receive their choice of a full sized Unite, or GO247 Men’s product if they spent $10 or more on 50/50 tickets. From there, those that attended could take some time to enjoy a glass of champagne, or a mimosa as they browed the generously donated silent auction items and snacked on some cheese and crackers.

It wasn’t long before Passions Beauty Studio owner/operator Chelsey Kara Harder took the stage to welcome and thank everyone for coming to the fundraiser. From there, local resident Della Spearing did a short presentation about her experience with STARS Air Ambulance earlier this year, when her father was transported to the hospital in Regina using STARS. Spearing explained that without STARS, she would not have had time with her father to say good-bye before he passed away. Representatives from STARS Air Ambulance were also on hand, and explained that it takes $20 million a year to fund STARS, and they are responsible for raising $10.5 million of that total themselves, so fundraisers such as this one are appreciated more than words can express.

Once the fashion show began, the crowd didn’t hold back their excitement as the room erupted in applause as models took to the runway one at a time. Between the male and female models, the entire audience watched in awe at the professionalism as they strutted down the runway, showcasing the clothing, hair and make-up to a tee.

It was clear that no one was leaving disappointed as they were treated to an entertaining night of fashion, prizes and helping to raise money for such an amazing cause. The idea for the fashion show first came about approximately 6 months ago, when Karissa Moore, Chelsey’s right hand woman/sister, suggested the idea of a fashion show fundraiser and from there everything came together. “We chose STARS as we wanted to give back to everyone in Saskatchewan. We have so many clients that come from all over the province and wanted to do something that could benefit everyone, no matter where you live,” Harder explained.

Harder announced the total on social media Monday, March 21 and through her message, you could feel the awe-inspiring gratitude to everyone that contributed to the event. “On my drive home after finding out that over $9000 was raised, I became overwhelmed with emotion and broke down into tears. Slightly embarrassed I would see someone I knew, I pulled over and started to write this. No words I write will describe how truly grateful I am to be a part of such an amazing event. I would first like to say I am very honoured to work next to some of the most extraordinary people “The Passions Team”, this group of people put their hearts and souls into this event,” Harder expressed. Harder also continued on to thank a generous group of Scotiabank ladies, who volunteered at the event and donated a large donation to the cause.

Due to the large success of the event, another fashion fundraiser is already in works for next year. Visit ‘Passions Beauty Studio’ on Facebook, visit www.passionsbeautystudio.com, or contact them at (306) 382-9707 to find out how you can get involved.
